Veramaris becomes Accredited by the Pet Sustainability Coalition

Delft, Netherlands, 30 June 2022 – On March 22, 2022, Veramaris received its renewal as a Pet Sustainability Accredited Business by the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC), a non-profit organization that works towards building a thriving and collaborative pet industry which creates a positive impact.

Veramaris provides pet food producers an opportunity to become part of a select group of companies continuously recognised by end-user consumers as offering sustainable options.  The PSC is the only accreditation in the pet industry that measures and verifies member business operations. Within this context, companies seeking accreditation must have measured, verified and met a minimum performance as well as having shown year-on-year improvement in certain sustainability areas. Veramaris has been accredited by the PSC every year since 2020 but has now also been evaluated for its social and environmental impact.

Veramaris began offering its ASC-MSC certified sustainable  natural algal oil to the global pet food industry in 2020.  It is the only algal oil currently available for this market that can deliver a high level of both EPA and DHA with a total concentration of 58%.  It is also proven that dry dog and cat foods with Veramaris Pets are more palatable than those using fish oil as a source of  omega-3s.  “The PSC Accreditation uses B Lab’s global assessment tool that measures a company's operations against the Sustainable Development Goals, making it a rigorous and comprehensive assessment method grounded in strong sustainability requirements”

Jeff Alix at Veramaris said, “We are honoured to have received PSC Accreditation. This acknowledgement goes hand in hand with our dedication to continually improve sustainability through innovative solutions and allows us to monitor our progress in our performance. Pet owners feel good about giving their pets a product that is 100% natural and free from ocean-borne contaminants, such as our algal oil. But increasingly, consumers are also scouring the shelves for products that have a low impact on the planet. As the only pet-industry certification based on business operations, the PSC accreditation alerts customers to the fact that Veramaris is true to its word when it comes to sustainability.”

”The Pet Sustainability Coalition recognizes the strength and rigour of the ASC-MSC certification process and its role as a top standard for sustainable sourcing. Veramaris’ innovative product and technology has the potential to help relieve the immense pressure that global food demand is putting on our marine ecosystems. The PSC Accreditation has verified significant progress Veramaris has made against Goal 14 “Life below water” as well as against goal 8 “Decent work and economic growth”.”- Ashley Lane, Accreditation Manager

By encouraging its members to take considerable measures to improve sustainability, the PSC aims to show how organizations in the pet food industry can strengthen business practices, increase efficiency, mitigate supply chain risk and boost employee satisfaction and productivity while spurring innovation. The Accreditation is just one way that the PSC is advancing sustainability and environmental concerns within the pet food industry. Elsewhere they provide assessment tools, strategic support and events to amplify their vision and core values.

About Veramaris

Veramaris, headquartered in Delft, The Netherlands, is a joint venture between DSM and Evonik, both world leaders in science and specialty chemicals. Established in 2018, Veramaris was formed to help realise a vision to conserve natural marine life by using the ocean's own resource, natural marine algae, to sustainably expand the world's access to Omega-3.

Veramaris extracts oil from natural marine algae, rich in both the essential Omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA, and also ARA, a long chain Omega-6, vital nutrients for improved brain, heart and eye health in both animals and humans.

The zero-waste industrial scale production process runs at a state-of-the-art site in Blair, Nebraska, USA.

Veramaris enables key stakeholders in aquaculture and pet nutrition to become independent of wild-caught fish and meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood and animal protein.
